A Lesson in Brand Management, Courtesy of Bill Cosby

A Lesson in Brand Management, Courtesy of Bill Cosby A Lesson in Brand Management, Courtesy of Bill Cosby Dennys runs a very strong Tumblr game by embracing the platforms culture. The Dennys blog is not a staid corporate promotional tool its a gleeful little community, and Tumblr users have grown very, very fond of the Dennys brand. The diner chain has successfully turned Tumblr into a significantcustomer base (and maybe even a talent community) which might have something to do with why the company saw its earnings grow by almost 19 percent last quarter.Pulling a Dennys is no simple task. As freewheeling as the companys Tumblr page seems, its the result of smart calculation. Im willing to bet that whoever runs the account is a Tumblr native, or at least a damnobservantresearcher corporate behemoth or not, Dennys posts come across as authentic and believable, in tune withthe aesthetics, preferences, and sense of humor endemic to Tumblr. The Dennys triumph is especially laudable whe n you consider just how distrustful Internet communities tend to be of corporate entities. Recall how bitterly the denizens of Tumblr reacted when Yahoo bought the platform and now, many of those saatkorn users are reblogging Dennys posts left and right.leise unconvinced that Dennys brand managers have shown exceptional prowess on the Web? Still think that anyone can dive headfirst into the Internet andgain legions of adoring fans by simply being random and hip?Well, then you and I need to talk about Bill Cosby. How Not to Manage Your Brand OnlineFirst things first I recognize that Cosby is an entertainer and personality not a company looking to attract talent so thecomparisons I make between his brand woes and the shining success of Dennys will be imperfect. That being said, Cosbys goals online are still fairly similar to the goals of any company. Regardless of whether or a brand is looking to attract fans, customers, or talent, theyre primarily looking to cultivate goodwill and a positive public image. Therefore, I think brands of all kinds can learn from Cosbys teams mistakes. For those who dont know, Cosby is the midst of a public image crisis hes facing 14 allegations ofsexual assault, according to CNN. I am not here to weigh in on whether or not he is guilty. I am neither judge nor jury, and my opinions on these allegations would require an entirely separate piece.I bring these allegations up because I suspect they motivated his (or his social media teams) decision to tweet a picture of him and invite other Twitter accounts to meme him on Monday. If my suspicions are correct, this was Cosbys first crucial mistake you will never, ever, ever deflect a scandal of this magnitude by trying to position yourself as a harmless jokester who wants the Internet to play along with you. Allegations of this severity will not be dispelled with a few goofy pictures, and to think this could be the case shows both a painfully tone deaf response to serious accusations and an underestimation of public morality. For Cosby to overcome these allegations if, indeed, he is innocent if he is not, I dont believe hell be able to overcome them, nor do I necessarily believe he should be able to overcome them requires a lot more than just palling around with Twitter. It requires serious, rigorous, direct engagement with the issue at hand.Cosbys legal team has issued a series of statements that attempt to refute the allegations, but his (or his social teams) decision to play it casual in the midst of the firestorm was a serious misstep. It made Cosby come across as oblivious to think he could invite memes at a time like this shows very poor judgment. And so, it should come as no surprise that the memes Cosby received were all sarcastic and venomous, with many outright accusing him of being a rapist (see the above-linked CNN article for examples). Cosbys (or his teams) decision to play it cool in the midst of such a situation only served to further lower his este em in the public eye. This is because the meme me tweet lacked the very same authenticity that makes the Dennys blog such a success. Dennys is obviously in tune with the thoughts and emotions of the people it interacts with. The Cosby Twitter account, on the other hand, tried to not-so-slyly manipulate fans and followers into serving its own agenda. The Cosby brand wanted people to ignore a very serious reality. Such a move is offensive it underestimates the agency and beliefs of the very people it seeks to win over. Why, then, would anyone fall in line? Why wouldnt they fight back and express their disappointment and disgust? The point is this no brand will ever win adoration or loyalty by treating its target audience like a bunch of easily swayed suckers. Authenticity, honesty, and mutual understanding are crucial to brand success in the Internet age. If you cant address your audiences concerns directly and truly, youd best keep your mouth shut until you can.Your brand may very well never face allegations as serious as the ones Cosby currently faces, but the point still stands your consumers the people who follow you, buy your products, enjoy what you do, and pay attention to your moves are human beings. Dont try to manipulate them into seeing things your way rather, try to earnestly connect with them.Cosby and his team did not do this. They were hoping to distract the people with what amounts to digital bread and circuses. It certainly doesnt win them any goodwill. If anything, it makes us all a bit more skeptical about Cosbys innocence.

Cities where renters can afford to live alone

Cities where renters can afford to live alone Cities where renters can afford to live alone Many renters don’t enjoy living with roommates, but in order to live alone you need to find an affordable home. This can be challenging, especially with rents on the rise across the country. However, there are some cities where living alone is within reach for a large number of workers. Below we look at these and other factors to rank the cities where you can afford to live alone. In order to rank the most affordable cities for renters to live alone, we looked at data on five metrics. We looked at median rents, the number of studio and one-bedroom apartments as a percent of all homes, median earnings for full-time workers, overall cost of living and unemployment rate.Key findings Live alone in the Midwest: Eight of the top 10 most affordable cities to live alone are in the Midwest. The only non-Midwestern cities in our top 10 are Lexington and Louisville in Kentucky. California and Virginia at the bottom:  Midsize cities in Virginia and California rank low. In cities like Virginia Beach and Chesapeake in Virginia, renters hoping to live alone will face two challenges: high rents and there a limited number of suitable places to live alone. California cities like Riverside and Fresno also rank poorly. Big cities are a mixed bag: While big cities tend to come with high rents, they also tend to come with plenty of studio and one-bedroom places. In San Francisco, for example, nearly 39% of homes are studios or one bedrooms. In Boston that figure is 31.5% and in Oakland it is 32.3%. The city with the largest supply of studios or one-bedroom homes is Washington, D.C. In that city, over 41% of homes have less than two bedrooms.  1. Cincinnati, OhioWhen it comes to affordably living alone, no cities scores better than Cincinnati. The average person living in a studio or one-bedroom apartment in this city pays only $575 on rent and the overall cost of living is over 3% less than the national average. With those low rents and costs of living, renters here can get started of saving to make the switch from renting to buying. The only major black mark on Cincinnati’s record is its unemployment rate. This city has a 4.2% unemployment rate which around the national average.Ladders is now on SmartNews!Download the SmartNews app and add the Ladders channel to read the latest career news and advice wherever you go.2. Omaha, NebraskaOmaha, Nebraska takes second. Overall the cost of living in Omaha is a bit higher than it is in Cincinnati. The average renter in a studio or one-bedroom apartment spends over $650 per month on rent and the cost of living in Omaha is on par with the national average. What puts Omaha in sec ond is its economic climate. Jobs are relatively plentiful here. In total only 3.2% of workers in Omaha are out of work, a score beaten by only 14 other cities in this study.3. Minneapolis, MinnesotaIf you want to rent an apartment to live alone, its important that you can find one. In Minneapolis over 34% of all homes are studios or have one bedroom, meaning there is no shortage of realistic option for renting alone. When it comes to price Minneapolis is on the pricey side, however. According to data from the Census Bureau, the average studio or one-bedroom apartment costs nearly $800 per month. Fortunately those high costs are somewhat balanced by high local earnings. The average full-time worker in Minneapolis earns nearly $49,000 per year.4. Lincoln, NebraskaNebraska’s capital comes in fourth. This is one of the most affordable cities in our study. According to our data the average person renting a studio or one-bedroom pays an average of just under $600 per month. At the same time the overall cost of living is a few percent below the national average. With those two statistics in mind, it makes sense that Lincoln is one of the most affordable places to live alone. In fact with the cost of living so low it may be a great place for a single person to buy a home.5. Lexington, KentuckyLexington scores well thanks to affordability and access to economic opportunity. This city ranks 14th in rent, with the average studio or one-bedroom apartment costing $608 per month. In terms of cost of living, this city costs about as much as the national average, which is great for a relatively large city. Jobs are readily available too.The biggest hurdle to living alone in Lexington? Supply of studios and one-bedroom apartments. According to our data, less than 14% of housing units in this city are studios or one-bedrooms.6. St. Louis, MissouriSt. Louis takes the sixth spot. Residents who are looking to live alone shouldn’t have to look too hard to find a studio or one-be droom apartment. Over 31% of all housing stock in St. Louis are studios or one-bedroom apartments. That means you should have no trouble finding an apartment that suits your living-alone needs. The city is hurt in this ranking by high unemployment levels and low earnings. In each of those metrics, St. Louis ranks below average.7. Madison, WisconsinResidents in Madison have access to some promising economic prospects. This city has an unemployment rate of 2.2%, second-lowest in our study, and the highest median earnings for full-time workers in our top 10. With high incomes and great job prospects, renters in Madison can afford to splurge on living alone. However the costs of living stop Madison from climbing any higher on the list. The city has the highest rent costs in our top 10 and the overall cost of living is 10% higher than the national average.8. Louisville, KentuckyAnother Kentucky city comes in eighth, this time its Louisville. Louisville scores well thanks to affordable rent s and low costs of living. The average person in a studio or one-bedroom apartment in this city pays less than $600 per month. And the cost of living is similar to the national average. The biggest concern for someone trying to live alone in this city might be finding a suitable apartment. According to our data, less than 16% of the housing stock in this city are studios or one-bedroom apartments.9. Columbus, OhioIn ninth is Columbus, Ohio. This is a college town with low costs of living. Overall this city ranks 11th out of all the cities we analyzed for cost of living. Renting a home alone is also pretty affordable. This city ranks 26th for median rental costs.Where residents may struggle is earnings and finding an apartment. In both of those metrics, Columbus ranks around average.10. Wichita, KansasOur list ends in one of the most affordable cities in our study. The average person living in a one-bedroom apartment or a studio in Kansas pays just over $550 per month. That means in o rder to afford living alone comfortably the average worker would need to earn about $1,650 per month. The good news for residents here is that average pay for outpaces that number. The average full-time worker earns about $3,440 per month.Data and methodologyIn order to rank the most affordable places to live alone, we looked at data on 100 cities. Specifically we compared them across the following five categories: Average rent for a rental with fewer than two bedrooms. This is the average of median gross rent for a studio rental and a one-bedroom rental. Data comes from the Census Bureau’s 2016 1-year American Community Survey. Percent of housing stock with fewer than two bedrooms. This is the percent of all occupied homes which have fewer than two bedrooms. Data comes from the Census Bureau’s 2016 1-year American Community Survey. Average earning for full-time workers. This is the median annual earnings for full-time workers. Data comes from the Census Bureau’s 2016 1-year American Community Survey. Cost of living. This is the cost of living relative to the national average. Data comes from the MIT living wage calculator. Unemployment rate. This is the unemployment rate from January 2018. Data comes from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. First, we ranked each city in each metric. Then we found each city’s average ranking, giving equal weighting to each metric. Using this average ranking, we created our final score. The city with the best average ranking received a 100. The city with the worst average ranking received a 0.Tips for Moving From Renting to Buying Start saving â€" One reason people become renters is because it is more affordable in the short run. You don’t need a down payment saved or any extra funds to pay for closing costs. But if you do want to become a homeowner, you will need to start saving. In some cities this can take multiple years, so it makes sense to start saving for a down payment before you are ready to buy a home. You’re paying for more than just a mortgage â€" For renters most of the costs of paying for housing are baked into the monthly rent, apart from utilities and other similar bills. For homeowners there are costs other than the monthly mortgage payments to be aware of. For example, homeowners have to pay property taxes, which can be costly depending on which state you live in. Homeowners also need to factor in homeowners insurance. Figure out your market â€" Knowing how much home you can afford is important when you are home shopping. By having a strict number in mind when buying a home, you can avoid making a mistake which will cost you down the line. This post was originally published on SmartAsset.com.

Robots in the Kitchen and at the Table

Robots in the Kitchen and at the Table Robots in the Kitchen and at the Table Robots in the Kitchen and at the Table Hello, my name is C-3PO and Ill be your server today. Diners may soon be experiencing this greeting, with C-3PO then sending your order to Wall-E or Optimus Prime in the kitchen. A version of that future is already showing up in our everyday lives. Robotics companies are creating robots to handle tasks including food preparation, cooking, and serving. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, part of the U.S. Department of Labor, more than 3.4 million people work in food preparation and serving in places such as fast food restaurants and cafeterias, with a median wage of $9.44 per hour. There are more than 4.7 million people working as waiters and waitresses, earning a median wage of $9.61 per hour. There are about 2.3 million cooks, who earn a median wage of $10.99 per hour. Prof. Martial Hebert [no relation to writer], director of the Robotics Institute at Carnegie Mellon University, says he anticipates an explosion of work and investment in this field. It follows the increased development in agricultural-related robotics. Its a logical next topic for robotics, with a huge market, Hebert says. Miso Robotics has created Flippy, a kitchen assistant robot that can work a cooktop, prep food for cooking, and plate meals. The robot wascreated for CaliBurger, an international fast casual chain specializing in Southern California style hamburgers. The firm is looking to automate as much of the food preparation as possible. Closeup of the robots hand. Flippy uses cameras and sensors to perform tasks. A screen allows a person in the kitchen to monitor what Flippy is doing. The robot can also move away so a cook can step in. When the company was being formed in 2016, says Miso co-founder and CEO David Zito, they were looking at new industries where robots could be used. Commercial kitchens seemed like a natural fit, both in terms of function and the market. Everybody eats, he says. Robotics are broadly applicable in that environment. Commercial kitchens present unique challenges for robots. They have to be designed to work with people in tight spaces. Theres also heat, smoke, grease, steam, and water to contend with. Robots work in much more difficult, dangerous environments, Hebert says. They work in mines, and go into disaster sites. So its not an obstacle. Still, robotic arms are not cheap, andthey have to be accurate to within less than a millimeter. The biggest challenge is what the robots are working with, says Hebert. In other fields, robots usually work with rigid materials such as rock, metal, or plastic. Foods like ground meat and tomato slices are definitely not rigid. They are also more fragile, and may be packaged in wrapping. Thats where designing custom hardware comes in, Hebert says. You have to have a creative approach. You cant go with standard grippers. The variables involved in food preparation also pose a challenge. Food changes shape, size, color and texture during cooking, Zito points out. Sensing and perception are used when making food, Hebert says. You have to design on a case-by-case basis for what food will be made. Zito explains that the sensors on Flippy were put slightly off-center, to look from a chefs vantage point and not be directly over the heat. Food safety is another priority. The robots have to be washable to stay clean, which means they have to able to handle water. The materials that come in contact with the food have to be food-safe. Flippy, for example, has an Ingress Protection rating of 67, which means it can handle being immersed in water for up to 30 minutes. Robots are being put to work out front in the restaurant industry as well. In countries such as China and Pakistan, restaurants are using robots to take orders and serve food. Pizza Hut has added robots called Pepper, made by Japanese company SoftBank, to restaurants in Asia. Robot waiters havent been a hit in all facets of food service. Chinese restaurant chain Hewelai found out the hard way after investing in robot waitstaff for three restaurants, at a cost of more than $7,000 per robot. There were problems from the start, as the robots frequently broke down, and were unable to perform essential tasks such as taking orders, pouring drinks, or carrying bowls of soup. Two of the restaurants closed. Zito says robots like Flippy are just the beginning. One area where robotics may work in food service is inventory. Schnucks, a chain of grocery stores in the St. Louis area, is using robots to verify pricing, and to check the shelves for out-of-stock items so they can be restocked. Miso is getting interest from other restaurants for robots that can perform tasks such as cutting produce, dredging chicken for deep-frying, and preparing food in a sous vide, where the food is vacuum-sealed in a bag then cooked in water. Its a very precise technique used in high-end restaurants. People who are spending $150 on a Waygu steak want it prepared just the way they want it, Zito says. With artificial intelligence and cloud access, robots can adapt, learn, and improve, he adds. Its like the Tesla, where it gets better with updgrades, he says. You dont have to run out and buy a new version. Were translating that idea from software into the physical. For Further Discussion Sensing and perception are used when making food. You have to design on a case-by-case basis for what food will be made. Prof. Martial Hebert, Carnegie Mellon University

8 Simple Steps to Make the Best Impact in a Job Interview

8 Simple Steps to Make the Best Impact in a Job Interview 8 Simple Steps to Make the Best Impact in a Job Interview Okay, so you actually made it through to the job interview â€" congrats! Your resume is perfect, you’ve gone through the company’s website, studied their every move and now you know their work culture by heart. Your best outfit is laid out on the bed and you set your alarm to make sure you’re there early. Now what? How do you make the best impact so that you actually land the job? Here’s how in 8 simple steps: 1. First impressions still count There’s a little secret that most companies do now want you to know. They actually ask their front of house staff to report how you introduce yourself when you arrive for an interview â€" shocking! With that being said, courtesy always pays off so once you’re inside, make eye contact, shake hands confidently without breaking someone’s hand and SMILE! Don’t mumble or speak so softly they can’t hear you. This will not get your name on the short list! 2. Don’t talk too much Remember, your interview is not a monologue â€" it’s a dialogue. Don’t lose your mind and dominate the interview just to “impress” someone. Find out how the interviewers view the company and what their goals are. This will help guide you when answering their questions and can often be very illuminating. 3. Use a method called STAR The STAR method will ensure that nothing gets left out when answering questions: S â€" Start with the situation T â€" Move on to the task A â€" Talk about the action R â€" Take the dominant element and finish off with the result 4. It’s okay to talk about your weaknesses The question “What is your greatest weakness” always comes up in an interview. If your response is, “I’m just not on the same wavelength if they don’t have the same passion, dedication and diligence to their job,” no one is going to believe you. Failures are what make us strong and unless you’re perfect, you’re going to have them. They want to know what happened, how you dealt with it and what you learned from the experience. 5. View your previous work experiences as positive When we go into an interview and start bashing our previous employers, we confirm that we are indiscreet and probably a big whiner. Once we start down this rabbit hole, it is almost certain that we will not make it on the hire list. 6. Forget the trivial questions Ask searching questions instead of the trivial ones like sick pay, salary and bonuses and holidays â€" everyone asks those questions. Don’t fall into that trap! Find out what the company wants from you and what they expect you to achieve in the first 3-6 months. Keep in mind that these questions might come up during the interview so stay alert and use it to make yourself stand out. It’s okay to ask them what they thing their company will look like in a year’s time when it comes to their products, revenues, marketing or whatever you feel is relevant. This is also a good time to ask them what you need to focus on so that you can make a positive impact in your first 3-6 months. It is also a good time to ask about any challenges this position holds and how you will need to solve them in the long term. 7. Energy and Passion is a must In dealing with job candidates over the years, I’ve seen a pretty even spectrum from the very shy to the show offs. The one thing to keep in mind is that you need to actually convey the energy and passion you have for various parts of your work such as skills sets and achievements in order to stand out. Don’t get all crazy, be modest but show that these are steps on a ladder which will show your energy, enthusiasm, passion and confidence about your ability to do the job. Being passive, dull and negative won’t land you the job. 8. Show them the work We can say that we’re organized and that we do great work but you need to show these as well if they are relevant to the interview. For example, if they ask you about a role you had in a fundraising event you headed up at your last job; show them any relevant documents or online publicity that you helped to organize. These should be in your portfolio so you can whip them out in a flash. Just make sure you label them so you’re not fumbling through paperwork. These simple steps will help ensure you get noticed and that you make an impact so that your chances of getting the job are much better! Follow these techniques to make sure that you are going to be noticed and that you make a positive impact. If you do, your chances of getting the job will be much better.

Your Layoff, Your Brain How to Get Out of Your Own Way

Your Layoff, Your Brain How to Get Out of Your Own Way Your Layoff, Your Brain How to Get Out of Your Own Way To combat the stress and anxiety that come along with unemployment, follow these tips from mental-health experts.Grace Barry did everything right. After being laid off from a high-level IT position at a government agency in December 2007, she got right to work at the job of finding a job.“I didn’t anticipate having a difficult time,” said Barry. “I knew that looking for a job was a full-time job, but I’m very organized about it. I take advice. I went and rewrote my resume so that it was more achievement-based; I read the books; I signed up for Ladders; I scoured the Internet; and, at one time, I had more than 100 applications out there.”Barry added that, through it all, she never stopped networking. The result of doing “everything right” for about seven months? One interview.Barry did receive an offer as a result of that July 2008 interview - but the job was in financial services, and the offer fell through when the industry collapsed.Looking for a job after being invo luntarily let go from a position is difficult under any circumstances. In today’s economy - with a national unemployment rate that recently topped 8 percent - a job search can be prolonged, and the effects can be even more pronounced on your body, mind and spirit.“It’s a big challenge to your capacity to adapt, just like a prolonged illness is a challenge or going through war is a challenge,” said Michael Jolkovski PhD, a psychologist and psychoanalyst in Falls Church, Va., and principal at Working Through, a consultancy focused on helping creative teams work effectively together. When a person loses a job, he or she is likely to experience anger, stress, and feelings of anxiety and depression. Left unchecked, these feelings can become detrimental to a person’s physical and mental health, hindering her ability to search effectively for a new job.In short, our natural responses may work against us.Anxiety triggers a sense of alertness In itself, anxiety isn’t a bad thing. Indeed, it’s a prime motivator when it comes to tackling challenges.“People do have physiological changes when they get anxious - their fight-or-flight system gets going, and, biologically, through evolution, if we perceive a threat we need to fight it or run away or, in some cases, freeze and hope that it ignores us,” said Kathryn J. Fraser, a psychiatrist and associate professor of psychiatry at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine in Albuquerque. “Unfortunately, the way our culture is, we don’t have people to fight or to run away from. We’ve got bigger, more nebulous things.” Fraser - who has been medical director of the Continuing Care Clinic at the UNM Psychiatric Center for seven years and whose just-completed first novel, “A Journey, a Reckoning and a Miracle,” will be published in July - said physical responses to an involuntary job loss can include sleeplessness, tension leading to headaches and stomachaches, and panic attacks that generate myriad physical symptoms.Anxiety symptoms, like heightened senses, might be useful to propel us in the short term, but they can lead to depression if experienced over longer periods, Fraser said.“If people get more into depression it’s partly because of what’s called the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, abbreviated as HPA,” she said. “It has to do with cortisol - that’s a part of our endocrine system that gets going. This is very useful in short-term threatening situations, but with longer-term anxiety, like with losing a job, that kind of response predisposes people to depression.”This c an lead to a destructive Catch-22.“If [people are] anxious and depressed and can’t sleep,” said Fraser, “they might be less able to do the things they need to do to find another job or to at least keep their spirits high enough to feel good about other things that may be going on in their lives.”Experts told Ladders that external support should be sought if these symptoms worsen or extend over time, or if feelings of hopelessness set in.“We all feel stress - but the shift … to anxiety or depression typically comes when you start to experience feelings of hopelessness, and some of the things you used to enjoy you no longer enjoy,” said Kevin Skinner, who has a Ph.D. in marriage and family therapy and is an author and radio-show host. “And so you shift gears from, ‘I’m going to make it through this - I don’t know the answer, but I’m going to make it through this,’ to, ‘I don’t know if we’re going to make it.’ ”“You need to have some anxiety - we all have some anxiety,” said Justin Tobin, a psychotherapist in private practice in downtown Chicago. “If we don’t have any anxiety, then we’ll never be able to meet any of our own goals…. It’s when we start to buy into the belief that there’s only six months left - what if I don’t find something? Those thoughts can push on the anxiety and make the anxiety uncontrollable.”Mass depression Coping with the feelings that go along with a job loss is challenging under any circumstances, but, as the economy continues to flounder and the news seems to go from bad to worse each day, job seekers find themselves dealing with negative group-think and perhaps even a mass depression.Jolkovski likened the current situation to the aftermath of 9/11. “The analogy I would make is, after 9/11, we all saw that film loop of that horrible, horrible fireball. After a while, we needed to turn off the TV - we’d seen that fireball enough.” Fraser took the notion a step further, saying that too much exposure to television and the Internet - regardless of the program - can have mental as well as physical consequences.“I think it’s important that people limit their time [watching] the TV,” said Fraser. “There are actual studies that show that too much TV goes along with increased depression. And part of it is, physically, people are just sitting there, watching something, and our bodies were not meant to do that. Again, back to evolutionary psychology, we need to be out running around and doing physical exercise.”In fact, experts told Ladders time and again that regular exercise and eating right are key to maintaining the healthy mind and body that will be required for an arduous job search. “We all sweat from anxiety,” said Elizabeth Friedman, a clinical psychologist in New York. “It is way better to sweat from a good workout. There is all kinds of evidence that exercise releases all kinds of good stuff in your brain and makes you more positive.”Indeed, people will have to work hard to overcome the repeated rejection that can come with an extended job search.“The mind has to change to the concept of, ‘It’s going to take me a while to find a job,’ ” said Skinner, who also shares his expert advice at MyExpertSolution.com. “[Think] ‘It’s not a matter of if, but a matter of when I get that new job. And until then, I’m going to be hitting up against a lot of rejection.’ And we don’t deal with rejection very well as human beings, especially when it has to do with our finances and being able to provide for our families.”Jolkovski agreed.“It’s sort of like the entrepreneur’s mentality, where people are doing something and the success is unc ertain,” he said. “Just like certain salespeople - if they get a 1 percent response rate, then they’re doing well. They have to have the mentality to make 99 calls and say, ‘Well, there’s one more down,’ instead of saying, ‘Oh, I’ve been rejected 99 times.’ ”Creative thinking The experts also noted that job seekers would do well to employ some creative thinking. In today’s market, your next job might not be the same as the one from which you were let go - in function, responsibility or pay. But that may have to be OK and, in some cases, can be a positive life change.“Try and flip it around as an opportunity,” Friedman said. “There are jobs out there - not as many, but there are jobs. You could find something a little different, and that’s cool. Change is growth. For many of us, change can be a very scary thing. For people who are very successful, change is usually a very positive challenge and, potentially, a very exciting thing. To do a job that’s a tiny bit different or even a lot different - but within your skill set in any case - that’s kind of nice.”After her lone job offer fell through and nothing else “hit” despite her best efforts, Grace Barry decided it was time for something a lot different. She set out to build a consult ancy of her own and began doing research and networking for the new business.During that process - and completely out of left field - she was recruited by a person she had gone to for advice and was hired for a position at his company.“[The position is] actually in business development, and I had only been on the engineering side, and it’s certainly at quite a salary cut,” said Barry of her new job. “But I’m working today, and I’m very, very happy to be working…. You always hear, ‘Keep networking, keep networking’ - I never stopped networking. I never stopped doing what I was supposed to do. I did everything that I read about, everything I heard about. It was almost like an act of desperation got me someplace where I could interview for a job.”Setting expectations is key to maintaining a sense of hope. It may take a while, but your journey won’t be exactly like Grace Barry’s, or any one person’s. It will be your own, and reminding yourself that you are t he one in control of the situation can be the key to keeping your composure.

3 Things To Give Up For A Successful Job Search (Pt 2)

3 Things To Give Up For A Successful Job Search (Pt 2) 3 Things To Give Up For A Successful Job Search (Pt 2) At its core, job search is about habits: good habits move your search forward in a fruitful fashion; obsolete habits that you used the last time you had to look for a job can make your search slow and painful this time around. While you don’t have to totally commit to, “out with the old, and in with the new,” it’s important to recognize that the strategies you used to get you to your last professional goal may not be all the same strategies to get you to your next level. Earlier in this series, we talked about the need to give up compartmentalizing your search, seeking someone else’s permission, and ignoring your vision for your future. Today, let’s go over 3 more things to give up in order to have a successful job search. Give up the distractions. I know it doesn’t seem like it would be distracting â€" quite the opposite â€" it seems like you’re engaged in good activity. However, give up all the job alerts you have automatically sent to you from the job boards. They don’t match what you want, and 1,000 people applied for any single opening before you got the alert. More importantly, I want to recommend a mindset shift. When you set up those alerts, receive them in your inbox every day, and take the time to go through them and apply, all of that feels like activity. But I want you to stop and ask yourself this: “Where is the productivity?” Those are 2 different things. How many phone or in-person interviews have you gotten from doing this? I’m going to go out on a limb and bet you that it’s zero, one, or in the single digits. Distractions. Spending time on the automated job alerts every day constitutes a distraction from much more effective job search methods that take you further, faster. Replace the old habit with the practice of identifying an organization you’d like to work for, identifying the relevant decision makers, and reaching out to them directly. Give up trying to have it all. No, I cannot make your resume work for the experiential marketing roles you’re thinking about, plus do double-duty in case you come across an opening for a senior operations position. And, beyond the absolute maximum of 2 versions of your resume, no, you can’t have any more. Just stop. I understand your particular set of skills and expertise may apply to more than 1 type of role. 2 types of roles is fine. 6 is not. Focus will fix your job search every time. If you can’t say the key thing you can come into the employer’s organization to do, why do you hold the expectation that he’ll look at your list of 25 areas of expertise and magically figure it out? Let’s not have your message be messy. Your primary message needs to succinctly, clearly articulate who you are, what you do, and the value you bring. That message is the core of your story. It’s your call for the employer to take the action you most desire: for him to inbox or call you regarding an opening that matches. Give up being, as opposed to doing. I’m going to need for your resume to not resemble the following remark: “Self-starter, motivated and productive with an effective combination of directing multiple priorities and generating innovative strategies to meet and exceed performance objectives.” Say what, now? The first 5 words are adjectives. You can say any adjective about yourself that you want â€" they don’t mean anything. However, what does mean something â€" and what the employer is going to write you a check for every 2 weeks â€" is not who you can be, but what you can do. Get to the point â€" pronto. Replace the fluff with substance. For example, “Senior loan officer who consistently drives double-digit monthly revenue growth, and provides leadership to sales teams in order to raise business performance.” That’s a statement about what you actually DO. The distractions, trying to be all things to all people, and hoping to lift yourself up with the self-congratulatory stuff are all old job search habits that are out of touch with what competitive employers are looking for today. Hearing these 2 words could lead to better sleep, fewer headaches

Hearing these 2 words could lead to better sleep, fewer headaches Hearing these 2 words could lead to better sleep, fewer headaches A simple “thank you” goes further than you might have expected, especially at work. In fact, hearing it could improve not only your job satisfaction but aspects of your physical health.Researchers from Portland State University decided to focus on those who received an expression of gratitude, studying a group of 150 acute care nurses in Oregon.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!Nurses have a tough job; the demands of their work are often linked to poor sleep, poor nutrition, and headaches. They also describe feeling underappreciated.“Nurses tend to have a thankless job,” said researcher and PSU business professor David Cadiz, in a release. “It’s very physical, and they’re often being screamed at by patients who are at their lowest. When nurses receive gratitude, it boosts them.”Almost 150 nurses were involved in the study. They filled out a weekly survey for 1 2 weeks, answering questions about sleep quality, headaches, healthy eating, and how many shifts they were thanked by someone at work.Nurses that were thanked more often reported higher work satisfaction, which in turn created resulted that went beyond the workplace, boosting healthier eating, better sleep, and fewer headaches.“This type of study helps us understand how to keep nurses in the workforce in a healthy way,” said Cadiz. “Nurses strongly align their profession with their identity and often look out for patients more than themselves. The gratitude matches up with their identity, gives them satisfaction in a job well done, and ultimately increases self-care.”Cadiz suggested that corporations had something to learn from the study, saying creating a culture of gratitude at workplaces could create a circle of positivity that would ultimately have an effect on workers’ health â€" and create a healthier company.“Employees that receive positive feedback are healthier, and that can impact the bottom line,” Cadiz said. “Preventing headaches and other stress-related symptoms means fewer sick days, and, in this case, cuts down the cost of replacement nurses and overtime pay.”You might also enjoy… New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklin’s daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people

This is how to better engage unhappy employees

This is how to better engage unhappy employees This is how to better engage unhappy employees As  business leaders, we often worry about former employees badmouthing their business or even stealing from the company on their way out the door, but those aren’t the people who pose the greatest risk. The  workers who can really bring your business down  still work for you.In case you haven’t heard, there’s an  engagement crisis in the workplace  these days. Research cited in Gallup  indicates that as many as 60 percent of workers are not engaged at work, representing more than  $600 billion of lost productivity  per year.It stands to reason people who don’t like what they’re doing won’t do very good work. That’s why I think the most damaging people at a company aren’t the ones who quit and leave. They are the ones who quit and stay. This is the situation where the employee says, “I hate it here. I’m leaving as soon as I find a decent job, but I’m not going to say anything until I give two weeks’ notice.” They’re physically present but mentally long gone .When it comes to employee engagement, ignorance isn’t bliss. Just because someone is physically in the office doesn’t mean everything is going well. That person could be letting key tasks slide, quietly missing deadlines or even putting key client relationships at risk. People who are unhappy but trapped are often the ones who damage morale by complaining and spreading rumors, copying intellectual property and creating a toxic environment. And they do this from the inside, which is far more damaging that the average rumor spread by an ex-employee.Why do they behave this way? Many employees are afraid to speak honestly about challenges and problems at work, even those that might be solvable. They fear that if they approach their managers and say, “Hey, I don’t know if this job is working out,” they’ll be told to pack their bags. That’s a terrifying situation, especially where they have a family to feed and bills to pay.Understandably, they avoid honestyâ€"or full-out lie â€"right up until the day they quit. At that point, you suddenly have a new hole to fill.Bad departures leave bad feelings on both sides that can overwrite years of goodwill and great work. Here are four ways to get ahead of this issue and keep unhappy employees from becoming toxic:1. Measure engagement and ask for feedbackAt my company, Acceleration Partners, we regularly ask employees if they’re present and engaged. We use Tiny Pulse to send out questions each week to gauge how employees are feeling about work. We also spend time at our annual retreat discussing what the company should start, stop and continue doing.2. Act on that feedbackWhen employees make good suggestions, implement those changes. Be open-minded about criticism, because your employees may be able to see emerging problems from the front lines before they are clear to you. Engagement cannot be a one-way street.3. Create a safe cultureIf you want people to be honest, you cannot walk them to the door for speaking their minds, you have to create a safe space for honest dialog. You need to hear what they have to say, see if it’s a problem that can be solved, and work out a plan together.Maybe you will find the person would fit better in another role. Maybe the person is overworked or under-challenged.Sometimes, adjustments can be made. Even if they can’t, it’s better to talk things out. Otherwise, problems fester and employees mentally check out.4. Make it okay to leaveA particular worker might not be a great fit for your company anymore. That doesn’t mean he or she won’t be an asset elsewhere, so make the parting a win-win process. At McKinsey and Company, a global management consulting firm, when people want to leave, the company provides resources to help them transition out. Since employees who leave the company often go on to work for potential clients, the company has taken the long view and created an alumni association. They don’t want to unnecessarily burn bridges.People a re going to leave your company. Even at companies listed among the best places to work, the average employee is only on the job for 24 to 32 months, according to Paysa research.People change, their interests change, companies change. It’s simply inevitable that people will move on.So, rather than burying your head in the sand, prepare your workers and your business for the inevitable transition. It’s the best way to prevent people from quitting the job and staying on your payroll. This post was originally featured in  Inc.Robert Glazer  is the founder and CEO of  Acceleration Partners  and the author of the international bestselling book  Performance Partnerships. This is the resume lie that disgraced a political candidate

This is the resume lie that disgraced a political candidate This is the resume lie that disgraced a political candidate Do people really double check your credentials and call up the schools you put down on your resume? Yes, let the story of Melissa Howard, a disgraced Republican candidate for the Florida Legislature, be your cautionary tale on why you shouldn’t fake details of your resume.Last week, local news outlet  FLA News reported  that Howard faked her resume and did not obtain a degree from Miami University in Ohio as she said she did in her candidate bio  (which has since been taken down). FLA News said that Howard attended Miami University from August 1990 to May 1994, but did not graduate. Initially, Howard said the accusation was false, and to prove it, she posted a picture of her diploma.FLA News backed down from its claims but then the school corroborated the outlet’s reporting. “We have no such record of a degree,” the university’s general counsel said in a statement, noting that the school does not even offer a degree in marketing that Howard’s diploma claimed she got. “M iami University’s degree for marketing majors then, as it is now, was a Bachelor of Science in Business.”The jig was up. Howard admitted that she had lied and officially suspended her candidacy last Tuesday. “I have come to the realization that the right thing to do for my community is to withdraw from the race,” she told WWSB. “I made a terrible error in judgement.”Why you should never fake your diplomaHoward joins a long list of people who thought they could fake their credentials without consequence. There are many fibbers among us at the office. Nearly half of us - 46%- said that we know someone who has lied on their resume, according to staffing service firm OfficeTeam.Last year, one high school principal was caught lying about her education credentials by some intrepid student journalists. Employees have even become executives and CEOs with lies on their resume before eventually getting caught. You can last a long time with a faked resume, but eventually, people ca n start asking questions and your past can catch up to you. Your high rank may show that you were able to exhibit basic competence in spite of gaps in your background. But the betrayal of trust is what led to each of these fakers’ downfall.“If you could lie about that part of your past,” hiring managers may think. “What else are you lying about?”
