How BYOD technology will change the way we meet in 2018

How BYOD technology will change the way we meet in 2018How BYOD technology will change the way we meet in 2018In recent years, the proliferation of BYOD - or bring your own device - has emerged as a major trend in the work landscape. Be it laptops, smartphones, or tablets, many employees are now able to collaborate from the comfort of their own devices.Ive seen this trend make meetings mora effective and perhaps even enjoyable. Heres how the BYOD landscape will continue to change the way meetings are viewed and conducted over the next decade, and how it could affect your companys meeting culture.Getting real-time information will eliminate unnecessary meetingsBecause updates and information pertaining to meetings can now be updated in real time, unnecessary meetings will become a thing of the past. If your teams to-do list for the day has already been laid out on a task or project management software like Asana or Trello, you can easily send that information to the rest of your tea m on your mobile device and avoid a meeting altogether.Additionally, BYODs value isnt limited to meeting reduction You can even use your own device to eliminate any information that may no longer be relevant to an upcoming meeting. For example, if there was a meeting to discuss your companys overall marketing spend and the marketing manager sent out a Slack message explaining the budget, youd no longer need to discuss those expenditures in a meeting. The marketing manager can update the meeting agenda on his or her device and send the refined agenda out to the team.Virtual meetings will growIt should come as no surprise that virtual meetings have been on the rise, especially as companies make flexibility a priority and physical locations have become less critical. The sheer number of avenues to conduct a virtual meeting have grown exponentially since 2000, elend just via Skype Google Hangouts, GoToMeeting, UberConference, JoinMe, WebEx, FaceTime and, most recently, Slacks call featur e are all viable options. Coupled with the fact that more people will be doing more remote work in upcoming years, you can easily see how virtual meetings will continue to be an important factor in the workforce. We may also need to reconsider how meeting notes are taken and action items are delegated. Even if everyone isnt physically present, the information can live in cloud-based applications and be accessed anywhere, anytime.Meetings will becomeshorterWith this influx of devices and variety of ways to instantly communicate from anywhere, meetings will inherently become shorter. There will be no need for meetings to last hours because most topics will be discussed with a short message in Slack, commented on in Quip or Google Docs, or assigned as a project or task in Asana or Trello - as mentioned above, collaboration and productivity platforms will eliminate unnecessary information. Therefore, meetings should ideally become much more concise (even those covering important informati on) because only information that is absolutely necessary to discuss will be addressed.Meetings will become more transparentGiven the shift towards teams working on cloud-based, collaborative platforms, meetings will become more open due to BYODs inclusive environment. Think of all of the information currently being collected, shared and documented on all employees own devices over a plethora of software applications. Now, apply all that collected information to todays collaborative workforce, including meetings. For example, meeting notes and information will be shared not only with members who attended a meeting, but also with other relevant team members who are integral to the project. As a result, the ability for any team member to be able to open up their own device and go back and review notes from a past meeting will become much more prevalent, rather than having to use a work computer and/or retrieve the information from, say, upper management. This will enable them to work w herever, whenever, at their own convenience, helping them achieve an optimized workflow that is much more transparent and free-flowing.Jason Shah is the founder and CEO ofDo, a collaboration platform that helps you run productive meetings. This article first appeared at Business Collective.

But the reality is your expertise wont do the trick for you 100% of the time. How you handle the interview can make or break you, Lets go over 3 strategies you can use immediately to make sure youre the person who gets called for the next interview, and ultimately hears the offer.Research, Research, ResearchAnd what are you researching, exactly? Start with Google News. Enter the company name into the regular Google machine, then click the news tab when the results come up. You can find out every piece the media ever published on the organization in just a few clicks, and the aggregated results can be as recent as 45 minutes ago.Google News is a treasure trove of information on whats happening w ith the organization right now, not to mention, a glimpse into where theyre going in the immediately future. Use the interview as your opportunity to show what you know that will help the company get there.Think Beyond InterviewAn interview is when you sit there and the other person asks you 10-20 questions. Then you leave. Then you dont get called back. Lets step up this entire exchange into a business meeting. Youre not in the same company (yet), but you most likely are in the same industry. Therefore, bring your knowledge to the table. Showcase what you know about the market, the trends, and the competition. You need not be a know-it-all. However, with your age comes wisdom youve seen how things shake out in your industry. Talk about scenarios youve seen in the past where youve had success, and how your knowledge may apply to what the organization youre interviewing with is dealing with right now.Put On Your Consultant CapToo often candidates approach the interview thinking some version of, I hope I get this job. Shift the focus from yourself to the other person. Let your guiding thought be, Im positive I can solve a problem for these folks. As much as candidates default to writing problem solving skills all over the resume, the interview is your time to actually illustrate that.Consultants prepare beforehand they dont just show up and start dropping knowledge. Consultants bring ideas and recommendations. This is precisely what you can do in your interview. Which candidate do you imagine leaves a stronger impression the one who sat there and answered 10 questions in a row, then said, Thanks, and when can I expect to hear from you? Or the one who floated a working theory about what the organization may come up against in the next quarter, and how she faced a similar issue in her most recent role, and dealt with it successfully? A new survey just out says a candidate over age 50 takes 20% longer to get hired than someone in the age 41-45 bracket. But that do esnt have to be you. How a Bad Job Can Make You Better at Your Work - The Muse

How a Bad Job Can Make You Better at Your Work - The MuseHow a Bad Job Can Make You Better at Your WorkI started taking pictures to capture quiet moments. Little details. Good light. Untold stories. I didnt get into picture taking to make goofy faces (and bad jokes) to keep a hangry lil toddler smiling through an afternoon family session. But a girls gotta eat. And people love flattering photos of young love at golden hour. So, smileWhen I first started taking on work that I didnt love, I felt like a total sellout. I would call my mom and wail that I was compromising my artistic integrity and that my work would never be the same. Lots of question marks and existential questions about purpose and truth filled the pages of my mind (and my journal). But, after a few months of doing work I hated, I began to see growth in the work that I loved...and hated. Now, Im not trying to encourage you to seek out work you dislike. If you can accept work that fits with your mission and vision 100% of the time, then by all means- be the exception to the rule. But, in the off chance that you might have to take on work you dislike (or even flat-out loathe)- here are three things to cling to when you think nothing good will come of it. 1. Doing Work You Hate Forces You to Stop Dreaming and Start MakingIn a perfect world, you would only write, design, and strategize for the projects of your dreams. All the beautiful ideas floating around your head would be shaped and formed in everything you got paid for- your dreams actualized in your portfolio and your bank account. What bliss But, lets be real. Creating the work of your dreams doesnt come along every day, and if you wait to create when the light hits just right, then you probably wont make anything. Author P.D. James says, dont just plan to write- write. It is only by writing, not dreaming about it, that we develop our own style. So, when you get discouraged about doing work you hate, remember that actually making something is be tter than dreaming about it.2. Doing Work You Hate Challenges You to Think Outside of What is ComfortableWe create from what we know and what we love. And even the fruchtwein innovative creators and makers get stuck in ruts and rhythms where they create the same work over and over. One of my junior high photography students, Nikita, loves surf photography. For the first five weeks of Photography 101 class, he would only take pictures of the water, waves, and surf. After five weeks of filtering through hundreds of images of the ocean and amateur surfers, I challenged him to do a portrait series of a family member. No water, no waves, no surfing. He hated it and took every opportunity throughout the week to remind me. Despite his reluctance, he came to class with the most beautiful photos of his sister, Tsungi. During class critique, one of his classmates said, you should stop taking pictures of water, cause youre way better at taking pictures of people. Leave it to a 12-year-old to te ll it like it is. So, who knows. Maybe the work you hate will actually force you to create something better than the work youve been hiding behind this entire time. Ive even found that trying something new entirely (like learning how to code so I can update my website or taking a photography class) helps challenge what I know and grow what I dont.3. Doing Work You Hate Pushes You to Pursue the Work You LoveThe argument behind doing work you love is that if you love it- well, it isnt work. But, when you spend multiple family sessions engaging moody teens to look like they love their parents, then you will crave one session of doing something you love. Doing work you hate pushes you to seek out the hours (and even minutes) in which youre doing work that fills you up- and reminds you why you started making that thing in the first place. So, if doing work you have forces you to create, challenges you to be uncomfortable, and pushes you to seek out the work you love- keep your chin up Yo ure on your way.Photo of broken pencil courtesy of Shutterstock.

Does Your Organization Have Enough Career Agility

Does Your Organization Have Enough Career Agility The findings from Randstads 2012 Employment Survey provide some illuminating and up to the minute insight into the reasons that todays employees are leaving their jobs. The survey revealed that approximately 86% of employees that are leaving jobs are doing so as a result of a lack of career development. Combine this finding with what we already know which is that candidate confidence has returned with employee resignations being 7% higher this year and we can see that career development is risingirresistiblyup the corporate agenda. So, the story is that candidate confidence is back and employees career development expectations are rising. The Career Engagement Group 2012 Career Agility and Engagement report has given some insight on what these expectations look like and it revealed three key findings31% of employees want to accelerate or fast-trac k their careers35% of employees want more work responsibility75% say theyre willing to use their own time to further their career and take on additional learning that would benefit them at work.Career AgilityThe big takeaway from these findings is that in this age of talent shortages and an increasingly mobile workforce, employees are looking not just for career development support, they are becoming increasingly self determining and are looking for Career Agility, that is they want to be empowered to be able to identify the best methods of reaching their career aims.If organizations want to attract and retain top talent they must tune into the post recession spirit and abflug building agile career development processes which empower employees to shape their own career development paths. So how can organizations offer Career Agility? This does not have to be expensive and the four areas that you should prioritize are1. Build a development road map for staff to followDevelop a competen cy framework which is kind of a road map so employees can see what skills they need to develop in order to progress up the career ladder within the business.2. Make DIY Resources AvailableOffer career support resources which include DIY/self service career review tools so self determining employees can review their career and understand their strengths, weaknesses and development needs.3. Provide access to coaches/mentorsEstablish an internal supervision program within the organization and allow employees to access this and select a mentor as they need them. This is a great reason to adopt a diversity based hiring strategy as you will attract workers from all different backgrounds, particularly older workers who can make excellent mentors. If your firm does not have enough internal mentors then you can tap into an external mentoring network and you should be aware that many mentors provide their service for free.4.Make a DIY Career Toolkit AvailableThis should be a a resource that e mployees can access which explains the career pathways within the businesses, along with learning opportunities, project opportunities, job vacancies and secondments and which also details how to access mentoring networks.Developing Career Agility within your organization does not have to be an expensive exercise, its much more about restructuring your career development processes to make them more accessible to employees and in a much more empowering and self determining way.
